F.A.Q.
Here’s answers to some of the most popular questions regarding joining Pendle Karate, what’s included and what to expect .
Is the class suitable for beginners and young children (age 5+)?
Yes. Our beginner classes are designed specifically for children aged 5 and above, with no previous martial arts experience required. We structure sessions so younger students learn at an appropriate pace and in a safe, supportive environment.
What does a typical class look like?
A typical class includes:
-
A fun warm-up to improve coordination and fitness
-
Basic karate techniques such as punches, kicks, and blocks
-
Movement drills and simple combinations
-
Partner exercises to practise safely with others
-
Focus games and challenges that build confidence and concentration.
Classes are structured but engaging so children stay active and motivated.
What skills will my child learn besides karate?
In addition to martial arts skills, children develop important life skills such as:
-
Confidence and self-belief
-
Discipline and respect
-
Focus and listening skills
-
Coordination and balance
-
Resilience and perseverance
Many parents tell us they notice improvements in their child’s confidence and behaviour over time.
How does progression work?
Students progress through a belt grading system, which recognises their improvement in skills, knowledge, and effort.
-
Gradings typically take place every few months once students are ready
-
Each new belt represents clear progress and new techniques learned
-
Instructors guide students step-by-step so they feel confident when grading
Progression is based on effort, attendance, and ability, not just time spent training.
What qualifications or experience do the instructors have?
Our instructors are experienced martial arts practitioners who are trained in teaching children. They typically hold:
-
Black belt qualifications
-
Instructor or coaching certifications
-
Safeguarding and first aid training
-
Experience working with young students and beginners
We aim to create a positive, safe, and encouraging environment for all children.
What equipment or uniform does my child need to start?
To begin with, children can usually wear comfortable sports clothing such as a t-shirt and jogging bottoms.
If they decide to continue, they will eventually need a karate uniform (gi) and belt, which we can help you arrange through the club.
Can my child try a class before committing?
Yes, we usually offer a trial class so children can experience the session and see if they enjoy it.
This allows parents to:
-
Meet the instructors
-
See how the class is run
-
Ask questions
-
Make sure their child feels comfortable
There is no obligation to join after the trial.
